Aisekai has shut down. As of September 2026, aisekai.ai no longer resolves at all, and the platform has been offline since the team announced its closure in early 2024. If you are looking for the AI character chat platform, it is gone; here is what happened, and where its community went.
What happened to Aisekai?
Aisekai launched in beta around August 2023 and grew fast: by the team’s own account it reached roughly 100,000 signups and more than 73,000 user-created characters within about six weeks. Its long-term memory system and character “initiator” engine made it a favorite among character-chat users.
The shutdown came down to a funding dispute. In its farewell post, the team said its sponsor required a shift to filtered, “safe” content. The team refused, lost the funding that paid for the AI infrastructure, and, because the sponsor owned the Aisekai brand, IP, and code, could not keep operating under the name. Users were given about two weeks to export their character definitions, prompts, and chat history before the servers went dark.
Is Aisekai coming back?
There is no verified relaunch. The team said any successor would run on subscriptions rather than sponsors, and their old blog references a storytelling project, but nothing has shipped publicly under the Aisekai name. The official X account and community Discord became the only remnants. Treat any site claiming to be a revived “Aisekai” with caution; the original domain is dead.
The best Aisekai alternatives in 2026
The character-chat category Aisekai helped popularize is bigger than ever. Based on what former users moved to:
- Character.AI: the biggest platform in the category, with a large character library and mobile apps. The strictest content filters of the group.
- Janitor AI: popular with users who left specifically because of filter disputes; large community character library. Our Janitor AI overview covers how it works.
- SpicyChat: unfiltered character chat with a free tier; see our full SpicyChat guide for features, safety, and ethics.
- Chub AI: a character repository plus chat frontend, strongest for importing and sharing character cards; our Chub AI guide explains the setup.
- Talkie (Soulful AI): mobile-first AI companion app, free to start; it had its own app-store turbulence in 2026 but remains active on the web.
What Aisekai got right (and what to look for in a replacement)
Aisekai’s standout features are now the checklist for judging alternatives: long-term memory that persists across conversations, characters that can start conversations on their own, private character creation, and a choice of underlying models. If those matter to you, test how each alternative handles memory before committing to a paid tier.
