  • Same-Origin Policy (SOP): A website can’t just reach into your bank account tab.
  • Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS): Rules stop websites from freely grabbing data from another domain.

They showed that an attacker could:

  • Extract a one-time password (OTP) by tricking Comet into forwarding it.
  • Access a user’s Perplexity account through hidden commands.
  • Potentially steal banking credentials, emails, and cloud storage data.

Even more worrying, malicious instructions could be hidden in user-generated content—a Reddit comment, a Wikipedia edit, or even a product review. You don’t need to visit a shady hacker site. The poisoned text could be sitting on a popular, trusted platform.

  • July 25, 2025 – Brave privately reports the flaw to Perplexity.
  • July 27, 2025 – Perplexity acknowledges and starts preliminary fixes.

  • Require explicit confirmation for dangerous operations like sending data, downloading files, or logging into accounts.

In short: give the AI less freedom, more guardrails.
